The marbled climbing perch (Ctenopoma weeksii) is a quietly fascinating anabantoid from the Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it lurks among submerged debris and vegetation waiting to ambush prey. Its appearance is deceptively plain most of the time, typically a warm brown with a prominent spot on each flank, but when startled it shifts rapidly into a blotchy, mottled pattern that makes it almost disappear against a natural backdrop. This camouflage-based hunting strategy is shared with a handful of other unrelated fish that have independently evolved the same leaf-mimicking trick, and watching it stalk live food is genuinely compelling. Like all anabantoids, it possesses a labyrinth organ that lets it breathe atmospheric air directly, so it will regularly visit the surface. Despite being a predator by nature, it is not an aggressive fish in the usual sense. Small tankmates will be eaten, but the species itself is rather shy and can withdraw badly if kept with anything boisterous or oversized. It does well in a group when all individuals are introduced together from the start, since later additions tend to trigger territorial disputes. Congo tetras, smaller Synodontis species, and similar mid-sized African fish make sensible companions. Breeding in captivity is rarely reported, possibly because these fish take several years to reach sexual maturity.
