The Sixbar Panchax (Epiplatys sexfasciatus) is a surface-oriented killifish native to a broad coastal stretch of West Africa, from Ghana east through Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and into Gabon. It inhabits calm, vegetated waters, sluggish rivers, swamps, lakes, and small brooks, spending most of its time near the surface where it hunts insects, worms, crustaceans, and small fish. The species is recognizable by its dark transverse bars along the flanks and rows of small reddish spots forming lateral bands, though coloration and bar count vary across the several subspecies and regional populations. The nominate form tends toward grey or reddish tones, while other populations can show bluish bodies with red-edged scales or yellowish flanks with brownish spotting. This is a non-annual killifish, meaning it does not follow the dry-season life cycle typical of many relatives, and it is well established in the hobby with multiple forms in circulation. Despite one older source flagging it as tricky to keep, most keepers report it as manageable provided water conditions stay soft and slightly acidic. It is peaceful toward other species and does best in groups of six or more, which brings out more confident, interesting behavior. Breeding is straightforward in a mature, planted setup, with eggs deposited into moss or floating plant roots and fry appearing with minimal intervention.
