Found across coastal West and Central Africa in slow-moving streams, swamps, and forest pools, this surface-dwelling killifish, Epiplatys sexfasciatus sexfasciatus, is a predator built for life at the waterline. Its long, flattened body and upturned mouth are classic adaptations for ambushing insects and small invertebrates from just below the surface film. The body is typically olive to yellowish-green, marked with several vertical dark bars along the flanks. The "sexfasciatus" name referring to those six bands. Males tend to show more vivid coloration and develop pointed fins as they mature. In the aquarium, this species rewards keepers who give it a well-planted setup with plenty of surface cover like floating plants, which bring out its natural hunting behavior and help it feel secure. It's a fairly composed fish but will eat anything small enough to fit in its mouth, so tank mates need to be chosen with care. A tight-fitting lid is essential. These fish are confident jumpers. Not especially demanding, but the softwater and slightly acidic conditions of its native habitat should be respected. This is a good choice for an intermediate keeper looking to branch out into African killifish.
