The Cinnamon Killi (Fundulopanchax cinnamomeum) is a small but characterful killifish native to a narrow slice of western Cameroon, found specifically in the shaded forest streams of the upper Mungo drainage between Badouma and a stretch roughly nine kilometers from the Cameroonian border. In the wild it inhabits slow, dimly lit brooks flowing over both basement complex and volcanic soils, the kind of heavily vegetated, tannin-rich environments that shape so many of Africa's most interesting small fish. Unlike many of its relatives, this species is not a seasonal killifish, meaning it does not follow the boom-and-bust lifecycle tied to drying pools. It lives longer and reproduces more like a conventional aquarium fish, which takes some of the pressure off the keeper in terms of egg management and urgency. That non-annual nature, combined with its reported ease of maintenance, makes it a more accessible entry point into the killifish hobby than many other Fundulopanchax species, though some prior experience with small carnivores is still worthwhile. It stays compact at under two and a half inches, so a modest but well-planted tank suits it nicely. Males carry the warm brownish-red patterning that earns this fish its common name, and they can show some territorial behavior toward one another, so keeping groups thoughtfully is worth bearing in mind.
