Found in the Río Orinoco drainage of Venezuela, Hypancistrus debilittera is a small armored catfish that packs a surprisingly assertive personality into a very modest frame. Reaching only about two and a half to three inches as an adult, it belongs to a genus well known among pleco enthusiasts for detailed patterning and manageable size. In the wild it likely occupies rocky, fast-moving sections of river where it can wedge itself into crevices and graze on biofilm and small food items. A habitat preference that translates well to the aquarium when you provide plenty of caves and broken line-of-sight. Territorialism is a real consideration with this species, and males tend to be the more aggressive of the two sexes, particularly around shelter sites. Keeping multiples is doable in a well-arranged tank, but crowding caves will cause friction. Diet-wise it leans omnivorous, so a varied menu of sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and the occasional protein treat keeps it in good condition. This is not a beginner fish, getting the tank layout right and understanding its social quirks takes some experience, but for a keeper who has worked with plecos before, it is a rewarding and compact addition to a South American setup.
