The Jamaican killifish (Cubanichthys pengelleyi) is a small but noteworthy species with a range limited to the island of Jamaica, making it one of the more geographically restricted killifish in the hobby. In the wild it occupies shallow, crystal-clear freshwater habitats with sandy or silty bottoms, tucking itself among submerged and floating vegetation. Its natural diet is varied and protein-rich, running from damselfly and dragonfly nymphs to tiny crustaceans like ostracods and copepods, as well as snails and other aquatic invertebrates. Replicating that kind of varied, live or frozen diet in captivity goes a long way toward keeping this species healthy. Unlike many killifish, it is not seasonal, meaning it doesn't require the egg-drying period associated with annual species, and its eggs hatch in roughly nine days. That said, it has a well-earned reputation for being tricky to maintain, and most sources place it firmly in intermediate-to-difficult territory, so this isn't the best starting point for someone new to the group. A well-planted, clean setup that mirrors its clear, slightly hard native water will give you the best shot at success. For killifish enthusiasts looking to work with something genuinely uncommon, it's a rewarding challenge.
