The Blue Cichlid (Nanochromis nudiceps) is a small but characterful dwarf cichlid from a very specific corner of the Congo basin. The Kinsuka rapids and stretches of the middle Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite the beginner care rating assigned by some sources, the notes from experienced keepers tell a more nuanced story: this fish demands genuinely soft, acidic water, and it will not thrive, let alone breed, without it. That makes it better suited to someone already comfortable managing water chemistry than a true newcomer. Males show dark scale edging across the body, a useful identification point when distinguishing them from the closely related Nanochromis parilus, which carries barring in the upper caudal fin that nudiceps lacks. Females develop a distinctive violet belly, which becomes especially vivid when she is ready to spawn. She will signal this by contorting into an S-shape and displaying directly at the male. This is a cave-spawning species, and pairs will dig beneath rocks or driftwood to lay their eggs, with both parents sharing guarding duties. Toward other species that can handle acidic conditions, smaller African or South American tetras, for instance, nudiceps is reasonably tolerant. Toward its own kind, it can be much less forgiving, so plan on giving each pair plenty of territory.
