The Orange Ctenopoma (Microctenopoma ansorgii) is one of the more visually rewarding members of the African climbing perch family, dressed in warm orange and reddish tones overlaid with a pattern that earns it the alternate name Ornate Ctenopoma. In the wild it inhabits the Chiloango River and the broader central Congo basin, where it navigates slow, densely vegetated waters. Like its relatives, it possesses a labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, which makes it surprisingly tolerant of low-oxygen conditions. In the aquarium this translates to a fish that can handle the occasional lapse in water quality better than many, though consistent soft, slightly acidic water will keep it at its best. It stays small, rarely exceeding three inches, but it is still a predator at heart, and small tankmates risk becoming a meal. That carnivorous streak means it does best on a varied diet of meaty foods like frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and similar invertebrate fare. It tends toward shyness, and a well-planted tank with plenty of cover will bring out more confident, active behavior. This species sits comfortably at the intermediate level. Not a beginner's first labyrinth fish, but very manageable for a keeper with some experience under their belt.
