Merry Widow
Phallichthys amates
Also known as: Merry widow livebearer
A low-key Central American livebearer that thrives where flashier fish struggle.

About
Found across Atlantic drainages from southern Guatemala through Costa Rica and into Panama, Phallichthys amates is a small livebearer that makes its home in some of the most unassuming environments imaginable. Sluggish creeks, muddy shorelines, and shallow backwaters with soft, debris-covered bottoms. It tolerates a surprisingly wide temperature range in the wild, which hints at the kind of resilience that makes it a forgiving choice for newer keepers. Males are noticeably smaller than females, as is common among livebearers, with females reaching the upper end of the size range. The species lacks the flashy coloration of its more celebrated livebearer relatives, presenting instead in modest, earthy tones that suit its turbid natural habitat. In the aquarium it behaves exactly as you might expect from a peaceful community fish. Calm, undemanding, and unlikely to cause trouble with tankmates. Its natural diet includes organic matter, microscopic algae, and the occasional aquatic insect, so it will accept a range of foods in captivity without much fuss. This is not a species that draws gasps at a fish auction, but it rewards keepers who appreciate understated, hardy fish with easy care and interesting livebearer behavior in a compact package.
