The rainbow killifish (Nothobranchius rachovii) is one of the most fascinating annual fish in the hobby, and that word "annual" is the key to understanding everything about it. Native to the lowland floodplains of the Pungwe and Zambezi river systems in Mozambique, this species spends its entire life in shallow, grass-fringed pools and swampy depressions that simply dry up each year. The adults die when the water disappears, but their fertilized eggs remain buried in the substrate, surviving months of complete desiccation until the rains return. In the aquarium, that cycle translates into a lifespan of roughly six to twelve months. Brief by any measure, but packed with color and personality. Males are vividly patterned in blues and reds with a bold tail, and they will defend territory with genuine conviction, so tankmates and tank layout both deserve some thought. Females are comparatively plain. Keeping this species is manageable for a patient beginner, but the real engagement comes from working with the eggs: hobbyists store them in slightly moist substrate for several months before introducing water, essentially playing out the dry season at home. Collecting localities are carefully tracked to prevent hybridization between wild-caught populations, which says a lot about how seriously killifish keepers take this genus.
