The Montezuma swordtail (Xiphophorus montezumae) is one of the more dramatic members of a genus already known for flashy males. Native to the cool, clear rivers and streams of northeastern Mexico, Tamaulipas, northern Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí, this species carries a tail sword that can match or even exceed the length of the fish's body, making it one of the most exaggerated examples of that trait in the entire group. In the aquarium it does best kept as a group with a skewed ratio favoring females, which helps keep male rivalry in check. Males will regularly posture and display toward each other, and if you mix them with other swordtail species expect the same behavior to carry over. That said, the fish is generally peaceful toward unrelated tankmates and unlikely to cause real trouble in a well-chosen community. Like other livebearers, it reproduces readily and can produce fry with little prompting, so be prepared for that if you're keeping mixed sexes. It's not the most demanding fish to keep, but the combination of group housing and the space males need to move comfortably puts it a step above beginner territory. A good choice for keepers ready to move beyond the basics.
